#57: Bahrain – Chebeh Rubyan (Shrimp Balls)

Despite what I wrote in my last post, I decided to squeeze ONE MORE country in for 2021 to bring my total to 57 countries. My plan had been to cook this one but wait to post until the New Year but what happened next changed everything. Maybe I’m a little superstitious, but I didn’t want to start 2022 off with a known dud. And that’s what this recipe was…a complete disaster. It was bound to happen at some point, and if I’m being honest, I’ve only had three inedible dishes this year which is a pretty good track record. This dish, Bahraini shrimp balls, had a very flavorful sauce but I think the texture of the shrimp balls themselves just didn’t work for me. It’s possible that I overcooked the shrimp a bit, but the gumminess of the end result was just bad. Matt agreed and so we had peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for dinner.

I’ll be back at this next week with a recap of some my favorites of the year. Happy New Year to all!

Overall Level of Effort: 2

Skill Level: Beginner

Would Make It Again? Uh…no way.

Additional Notes: This wasn’t about seasoning or flavor for me. In fact, we both agreed that if we made this sauce with a chicken or turkey meatball they’d be great. Certain textures can be really off putting and this was certainly the case for me.
